Newcastle United forward Anthony Elanga sends out a brutal message to Eddie Howe after start ‘harsh’ claim

Anthony Elanga has shared his thoughts on his early days at Newcastle United following his £55 million switch from Nottingham Forest, expressing confidence that things will soon “click” for him on Tyneside.

The 23-year-old Swedish winger has yet to record a goal or assist in 10 appearances across all competitions. Despite that, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe defended him, insisting the statistics don’t tell the full story. “It’s harsh to say he’s got no goals or assists,” Howe said. “He’s created chances, but sometimes it’s out of his control when others don’t convert them. I’ve been pleased with his overall contribution—he’s shown pace, power, and threat—and I believe there’s still plenty of improvement to come.”

Elanga was named man of the match in Newcastle’s 4-0 Champions League win over Union Saint-Gilloise, where his cross led to the opening goal before he won the penalty for Anthony Gordon’s strike. However, his performance against former club Nottingham Forest was less impactful, as he was substituted midway through the second half despite Newcastle’s 2-0 victory.

Reflecting on his adaptation, Elanga said during his first press conference: “I know how good I am and how good I can be. It’s about taking my chances. Once the first goal comes, everything will click. It’s a new system, new teammates, and we’re still building that understanding.”

He also spoke highly of head coach Eddie Howe, calling him “the best coach I’ve ever had.” Elanga added, “He’s helping me a lot, both on and off the pitch. I feel I’m improving every day—and that’s the most important thing.”
