Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope has confirmed that his contract at St James’ Park runs until June 2027, following reports last week that the club had quietly activated an extension clause.
The deal, which was privately agreed, was confirmed ahead of Newcastle’s Champions League clash with Benfica. It was previously thought that Pope’s contract would expire in 2026, having initially signed a four-year deal when he joined from Burnley for £10 million in 2022.
Reports suggested the 32-year-old triggered the extension as part of a bonus tied to Newcastle’s Champions League qualification, though the club has yet to make an official announcement.
Since arriving on Tyneside, Pope has been a key figure in one of the Premier League’s strongest defences, conceding just 33 goals in 38 league matches during his debut season. He has continued that form into the current campaign, recording six clean sheets in his first ten appearances.
When asked to clarify his contract situation before Tuesday night’s match, Pope said the extension was part of a deal signed over two years ago.
“It’s tough to say [how it feels] because I actually signed that in July 2023,” Pope smiled. “So, I was happy about it then, and my contract runs until July 2027. I’m looking forward to spending as long as I can here.”
Pope praised the club’s progress under Eddie Howe, noting the continued improvement both on and off the pitch.
“The club is evolving every few months — new players, facilities, and development as a team. It’s been great to be part of it,” he said. “We’ve won our first trophy, qualified for the Champions League twice, and now we’re looking to build on that and do it again.”
