Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle United, gave an update on Callum Wilson’s back trouble.
Last week, Wilson went to Germany with the Newcastle team to visit Adidas Headquarters. He missed training and last Saturday’s 3-1 friendly win over SpVgg Unterhaching because of a back problem that Eddie Howe said needed professional care.

Howe revealed that Wilson had surgery on his back after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Hull City at the MKM Stadium. Wilson will likely miss the opening game of the 2024–25 Premier League season against Southampton on August 17 (3 p.m. kick-off). Howe said this after the win at Hull: “Callum had an injection in his back.” Without going into too much detail about the injury, I think it was a bulge in his disc that needed to be fixed. He had surgery for that, and I think he might not be able to play at all to begin the season.

“But thank goodness there aren’t too many games to start with; we play every week, so I hope he won’t miss too many.”

Wilson won’t be able to play in the upcoming friendlies against Urawa Red Diamonds, Yokohama F. Marinos, Girona, and Brest, which are all before the new Premier League season.

After playing Southampton, Newcastle will go to AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on August 25 for a game that starts at 2:00 p.m. Wilson has not played against his old team in the Premier League since he joined Newcastle in 2020. He has missed all four games since then.

Wilson has been linked with a move away from Newcastle this summer, but his injury is set to stop any plans to leave. In the last year of his deal at St. James’ Park, the 32-year-old scored the second most goals for the club in the Premier League, behind Alan Shearer.
