Newcastle United icon assesses Magpies trio after England’s triumphs against Ireland and Greece
Newcastle United icon assesses Magpies trio after England’s triumphs vs Ireland. Alan Shearer, the former captain of Newcastle United, expressed his
satisfaction with the performances of three current Magpies players—Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento, and Lewis Hall—following their contributions to England’s Nations League victory over the Republic of Ireland on Sunday evening.
The victory at Wembley represented the inaugural occasion on which three Magpies players commenced a Three Lions match since Glenn Hoddle included Shearer, Rob Lee, and David Batty in his starting eleven for a World Cup qualification triumph against Georgia.
As expected, Shearer had the most significant influence that night, scoring an unassailable free-kick to secure victory against a Georgian team featuring future Magpie Temuri Ketsbaia.
Last week offered a succession of notable experiences for the current cohort of United’s England players, as Hall made his debut off the bench in Thursday’s victory in Greece, followed by his inaugural start against Ireland on Sunday.Livramento, a fellow Magpies full-back, was also given his first start at the senior level in that same game.
He rewarded interim head coach Lee Carsley by registering his first assist for his country. In order to conclude what Shearer referred to as “a good night for Newcastle,” Livramento’s deflected cross enabled Gordon, a United teammate, to score his first goal for the senior side.
The Three Lions cruised to a Wembley victory, which secured their re-entry into the Nation League’s elite.Shearer expressed his satisfaction with the trio’s accomplishments during the final international break of the year and believes that his former club should adopt a comparable perspective on their performances.
In his interview with The Rest is Football podcast, he also contemplated the last time Newcastle had three players in an England starting eleven as he evaluated the trio’s performance:
“The last time three Newcastle players started for England was in 1997.” I believe it was against Georgia. David Batty, Rob Lee, and myself. I believed that they performed exceptionally well. Livramento and Gordon, in addition to Lewis Hall, started against Ireland after coming on as a substitute against Greece.
Consequently, Newcastle had a successful evening. I believed that the three Newcastle lads performed admirably.
