Newcastle United is currently engaged in contract negotiations following a reversal in their transfer strategy and a reported ‘verbal agreement’ with a player valued at £20 million.

Eddie Howe has indicated that Newcastle United is engaged in discussions with Dubravka regarding the potential renewal of the goalkeeper’s contract, which is scheduled to expire in the upcoming summer.

The 36-year-old had an agreement in place to transfer to Al-Shabab at the beginning of the month; however, Newcastle refused to authorise the goalkeeper’s departure while he continued to serve as the club’s starting goalkeeper.

The Magpies have demonstrated commendable performance this season, particularly with Dubravka occupying the custodian position. However, Nick Pope’s return from injury following a seven-week absence intensifies the competition for Martin Dubravka to retain his position within the team.

“Martin is unwilling to depart,” Howe stated. “We are currently engaged in discussions with Martin regarding a new contract, and we anticipate a prompt resolution to this matter.” However, he has not pursued any assurances regarding his position or any matters beyond his efforts to remain within the team and perform effectively.

Newcastle United continues to pursue the acquisition of James Trafford. Although Dubravka is presently satisfied with his position within the Newcastle squad, the club is actively seeking to enhance its goalkeeping contingent. During the previous summer, Newcastle endeavoured to secure the acquisition of James Trafford from Burnley.

The Magpies had reached a verbal agreement regarding terms with Trafford; however, they were unable to finalise a deal with Burnley, as their £16 million offer was declined. Notwithstanding the unsuccessful transfer, Newcastle has persisted in monitoring the 22-year-old player throughout this season, with the intention of making a renewed effort to acquire him during the summer.

Trafford has achieved an impressive record of 19 clean sheets in 28 Championship matches this season and has recently garnered attention for successfully saving two late penalties during a 0-0 stalemate against Sunderland.

He is currently valued at approximately £20 million; however, his worth may rise by the summer if he maintains his commendable performance and Burnley achieves promotion. Currently, Newcastle possesses five first-team goalkeepers within their Premier League roster: Dubravka, Pope, Vlachodimos, John Ruddy, and Mark Gillespie.

Similar to Dubravka, Vlachodimos has received an offer to join Al-Shabab; however, he has declined this opportunity in favour of continuing his career in Europe. Nevertheless, should he choose to remain at Newcastle, his prospects for first-team participation are likely to be constrained.
