The Newcastle United midfielder has been sidelined until 2025 as a result of Premier League regulations following his return from international duty.

Isaac Hayden, a midfielder for Newcastle United, made his complete international debut for Jamaica and his first senior start of the 2024-25 season last night. Hayden began Jamaica’s 4-2 second-leg loss in St. Louis on Monday evening after coming off the bench in the 1-0 CONCACAF Nations League first-leg loss to the United States.

Demarai Grey scored twice for Jamaica, and the hosts advanced to the semi-finals as a result of Christian Pulisic, Ricardo Pepi, Timothy Weah, and a Di’Shon Bernard own goal. Steve McClaren, a former manager of Newcastle and England, summoned Hayden to the Jamaica national team.

The 29-year-old formally changed his international allegiance from England to Jamaica last month, a nation for which he is eligible to play due to his father’s status.

Hayden has made two uncommon competitive appearances since the transition.

Hayden has not appeared in a match at the club level since his loan tenure at Queens Park Rangers concluded last season, with the exception of one match for Newcastle’s Under-21s team in the National League Cup this season.

Hayden is under contract with Newcastle until 2026; however, it is improbable that he will return to the first team.

He has been excluded from Eddie Howe’s 25-man Premier League roster and is currently training separately from the first team. Consequently, it is probable that his appearances for Jamaica will serve as his final competitive appearances in 2025.

Hayden will attempt to negotiate a transfer from Newcastle during the January transfer window, as he was unsuccessful in doing so during the summer.

According to the 2024-25 Premier League regulations, players who are not included in a 25-man squad are prohibited from participating in a league match unless they were born on or after January 1, 2003.

Hayden is currently ineligible to participate in the Premier League; however, he would be ostensibly eligible to participate in the Carabao Cup next month, as the competition does not adhere to the same squad regulations.

The Magpies may also attempt to negotiate an early release for Hayden from his contract, which would enable him to join another club on a free transfer.

In December 2021, he made his final appearance for Newcastle in a 4-0 loss to Manchester City. Subsequently, he has encountered a variety of injury complications that have led to his exclusion from the first-team lineup.

Hayden’s 2021-22 season was prematurely terminated by a knee injury sustained nearly three years ago, which also affected his loan stint at Norwich.

He was on loan at Standard Liege for the first half of the previous season before terminating the agreement and joining QPR for the latter half of the 2023-24 season.
