Fabian Schar got away with some silly stuff in the first half, but Newcastle United still had a narrow lead over Southampton.United kept a slim lead over Southampton because Fabian Schar got away with something silly in the first half.

Newcastle United barely beat Southampton at St. James’ Park thanks to a goal from Joelinton in the first half.

They had a hard time though because Fabian Schar got sent off in the first half for trying to headbutt Ben Brereton Díaz. Even though they only had 22% of the ball, Newcastle barely beat the guests, who had 19 chances to score.

It was hard to choose a man of the match for the Magpies, but here’s a full rundown of how well United played today.

Here’s how the guys did in the game against the Saints:

Nick Pope 9

He kept things calm at the back and made some great stops. The best one was when he tipped over Adam Armstrong’s goal-bound shot. An important clean sheet.

Tino Livramento 7

A steady game that gave Newcastle a way to attack down the right side, but he needs to play better to beat Kieran Trippier.

Fabian Schar 4

When Ben Brereton Diaz hit him for the first time, you can see why he was mad. But to try to hit him in the head again was stupid and will now get him and the team a long-term ban.

Dan Burn 8

A huge figure in the back, and the Blyth boy stepped up to challenge after Schar was sent off.

Lewis Hall 7

After the early yellow card, he was always on edge. It’s not a bad show, but it could be better.

Joelinton 8
Did a lot of work in the middle and came out on top with the big win.

Bruno Guimaraes 8
It was a great start as captain. Had a party for every tackle and block in a game of inches.

Sean Longstaff 8

You should feel good about this. Did a lot of damage and played to win.

Anthony Gordon 7
He had a hard time getting the ball because Southampton had 78% of it.

Jacob Murphy 6
Just 13 touches didn’t make a big difference.

Alexander Isak 7

Not much help and not many chances, but they came up with an assist.

Subs

8. Emil Krafth (for Murphy 30)

He played his part and kicked six clearances away.

Lloyd Kelly 7 (in place of Hall 70)

A great start.

The price Harvey Barnes 5 (for Gordon 70)

Not a big deal.
