Newcastle United are looking at other players in case they can’t get Marc Guehi.

Newcastle United made it clear to Crystal Palace that they are open to looking at other players besides their top goal, Marc Guehi.

Crystal Palace has decided to sell Joachim Andersen to Fulham for £30 million, but they still want “superstar money” for Guehi, who plays defense with Andersen. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish couldn’t imagine losing both center-backs, but with just over a week left in the transfer window, the Eagles’ demands feel like a bit of a risk.

In addition to having less than two years left on his deal, Guehi is the most valuable player in the world right now because of how well he played at the Euros. Even though that’s a good reason for Crystal Palace to ask for, say, £70m, would the club really be able to get that much in a year if the Eagles don’t sign him to a new deal? Especially since PSR rules and the possibility of punishments have made many clubs more cautious than ever when it comes to buying players.

It’s interesting that Spurs decided to pay up to £65 million to get Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, making him the most expensive Premier League player signed so far this window. That is a big amount of money, but a year ago, players like Declan Rice, Moises Caicedo, Josko Gvardiol, Rasmus Hojlund, Kai Havertz, and Dominik Szoboszlai moved for fees between £60m and £100m.

Guehi would be in this group, and persistent Newcastle has not given up on the defender, even though they have signed top targets like Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in the last few days of past windows. Having said that, the Magpies have also been looking at other choices in case they can’t find a way to break through. Crystal Palace was reminded of this by Newcastle’s interest in Chelsea center back Axel Disasi and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba. Eddie Howe had said that the club would be ready to back out of a deal if the asking price was “too much.”

Tapsoba is a very desirable player, but he just signed a new long-term deal with Bayer Leverkusen last year, and the defender freely admitted that his contract had a “crazy” release option. After winning the Bundesliga last season, Tapsoba was excited to play in the Champions League for the first time. He told us last month that he “did not come here to move again after two years.”

Disasi, on the other hand, started working at Monaco during the same summer window that Paul Mitchell started working at Newcastle in 2020 as the club’s sports director. Once he was done, the Frenchman thanked Mitchell for being “great with me” while he was with the Principality.

Following treatment for a hernia earlier this summer, Disasi, who is 26 years old, was not yet considered ready to play in Chelsea’s opening weekend loss to Manchester City. This was during a time of even more change at Stamford Bridge.
