Newcastle United’s official statement regarding the Brighton incidents has been released by the Premier League. On Sunday afternoon, Newcastle United were denied a penalty at Brighton & Hove Albion due to a VAR overturn.

Tariq Lampety’s tripping of substitute Anthony Gordon on the perimeter of the penalty area resulted in Brighton’s 1-0 lead following Yankuba Minteh’s first-half goal. Before VAR intervened and reversed the decision, referee Craig Pawson promptly pointed to the penalty spot. Not because there was no foul play, but rather because it occurred outside the designated area.

The Premier League’s official match centre account issued a brief statement on Twitter to elucidate the decision. It stated, “57′ VAR OVERTURN.” The referee’s penalty judgment for Lamptey’s challenge on Gordon was reviewed by VAR, who recommended that Newcastle be awarded a free kick to restart play, as the contact occurred outside the penalty area. Shortly thereafter,

Newcastle was awarded a penalty by Pawson after Willock was brought down by a challenge from Jan Paul van Hecke within the area. Pawson was instructed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to proceed to the pitchside monitor. Brighton was awarded a free kick by Pawson after consulting the monitor, and Willock was booked for simulation. The Premier League’s match centre statement regarding the second penalty incident was as follows:

“70′ VAR OVERTURN.” The referee’s judgment of a penalty for the challenge by van Hecke on Willock was reviewed by VAR, who determined that the contact was minimal and did not warrant a penalty. An on-field review was recommended. The referee awarded Brighton an indirect free kick and issued a yellow card to Willock for simulation after conducting a review.

The decision was not reversed by VAR, and Fabian Schar’s potential late winner was disallowed after a VAR review. The contest was ultimately won by Brighton, with a score of 2-1.
