Almiron was Newcastle’s club record signing when he relocated to Tyneside from MLS side Atlanta United in a £20m transfer in January 2019. The winger has since scored 30 goals and provided 12 assists in 216 appearances for the Magpies.

He is most notably remembered for scoring their first goal in a 4-1 victory over Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on the night that Champions League football made a spectacular return to St James Park.

significantly contributed to Eddie Howe’s team’s return to the top tier of European football by scoring 11 goals in 34 Premier League appearances during the 2022/23 season. However, he has encountered difficulty in securing game time in the past 18 months.

Almiron has only made one Premier League start this season, despite receiving continuous support from Howe.

The majority of his action has been in the Carabao Cup, where he was included in the starting eleven for the win at Nottingham Forest and a narrow home victory against AFC Wimbledon. Nevertheless, the winger was relegated to the bench for the fourth round victory over Chelsea and has been an inactive substitute in the most recent Premier League victories over Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

Nevertheless, there may be an exit strategy for Almiron from St James Park. In recent months, he has been associated with the Saudi Pro League and MLS.

According to South American news outlet TyC, River Plate is “attempting to disrupt the market” by acquiring the winger in advance of their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup next year.

Almiron is reputed to be a lifelong supporter of the Argentinean giants, and the report attributes the Magpies star with describing the opportunity to play for River as “one of his big dreams.

” The Paraguayan reportedly stated, “I was a fervent fan of the games when I was a boy, as my paternal family is from Argentina.” I watch the games with my family whenever possible, provided that my schedule permits. I have always aspired to perform in River; it is one of my greatest aspirations.
