Chris Wilder makes candid admission on Kalvin Phillips situation at Sheffield United F.C.
Kalvin Phillips’ loan move to Sheffield United F.C. from Manchester City F.C. was meant to reignite his career, but things have not gone to plan.
The former Leeds United F.C. midfielder had only just begun to settle following his January switch when his momentum was halted during the fiery Steel City derby.
Derby setback and injury blow
Phillips’ fresh start quickly unravelled after he was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge shortly after half-time in the clash with Sheffield Wednesday F.C..
Since then, the England international has not featured, and it has now emerged that he has undergone a minor knee procedure, further delaying his return.
Wilder confirmed that the issue was relatively small, but it will keep the midfielder sidelined until after the upcoming international break.
Wilder clarifies wage situation
Amid the setback, Chris Wilder also addressed the financial side of the deal, revealing that Sheffield United are not covering Phillips’ full wages during his recovery period.
The Blades boss stressed that the agreement—put in place by club official Steven Bettis—was structured to protect the club, while also confirming that Phillips had passed a medical upon arrival.
Wilder said the midfielder remains a valued presence in the squad, describing him as both a “top character” and a “quality player,” despite his disrupted spell so far.
Time running out to make an impact
Phillips had chosen a move to Bramall Lane in search of regular minutes and a chance to rebuild his form after a difficult spell at Manchester City.
However, a combination of suspension and injury has stalled that progress at a crucial stage of the season.
With limited football in recent years, there are also concerns over his sharpness, and this latest interruption could make it even harder for him to rediscover peak form quickly.
Big question ahead
Once dubbed the “Yorkshire Pirlo” during his rise at Leeds, Phillips now faces another challenge in his bid to get back to his best.
With the season entering its final stretch, the key question remains whether he can return in time to make a meaningful impact for Sheffield United—or if this latest setback will leave him playing catch-up once again.
