Former Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie is enjoying an impressive season with Hull City.
The 29-year-old forward has scored 13 goals so far, making him the club’s joint-top scorer as the Tigers push for a Championship play-off spot. Under the guidance of Sergej Jakirovic, Hull currently sit inside the top six and are closing in on a potential return to the Premier League—something they last achieved after winning the League One title in 2021.
McBurnie joined Hull in the summer following his exit from UD Las Palmas. Despite contributing three goals and six assists in La Liga, he was unable to prevent relegation, prompting his move back to English football.
Before his spell in Spain, McBurnie spent five seasons with Sheffield United and also had stints at Swansea City and Barnsley FC.
McBurnie takes swipe at Sheffield Wednesday
Hull City marked their clash with Sheffield Wednesday by hosting a retro-themed matchday, encouraging fans to wear classic kits. As part of the promotion, the club shared an image of McBurnie wearing Hull’s 2015/16 strip—a campaign fondly remembered by supporters.
That season ended in dramatic fashion, with Hull securing promotion to the Premier League after defeating Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off final at Wembley. The match was decided by a second-half goal from Mohamed Diamé, sealing a 1-0 victory.
Hull had finished fourth in the table that year, while Wednesday placed sixth, nine points behind. The Owls returned to the play-offs the following season but fell short again, losing to Huddersfield Town on penalties in the semi-finals.
The social media post referencing that 2015/16 triumph can be seen as a subtle dig at Sheffield Wednesday—something likely to amuse Sheffield United supporters given the long-standing rivalry.
Now, Hull will be hoping to replicate that success this season under Jakirovic. A positive result against Henrik Pedersen’s side could prove crucial in securing their place in the play-offs and keeping their promotion hopes alive.
