Paul Merson criticizes Arsenal player following the draw against Fulham.
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has expressed his disapproval of Gabriel Martinelli in the wake of the Gunners’ disappointing 1-1 stalemate against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
Arsenal experienced an early setback; however, William Saliba’s goal in the second half equalized the score.
Nevertheless, the drama transpired in the latter stages of the match when Bukayo Saka seemingly secured a decisive goal in the 89th minute; however, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) subsequently invalidated the goal due to Gabriel Martinelli being marginally offside in the preceding play.
During a discussion on Sky Sports, Merson articulated his dissatisfaction regarding Martinelli’s positioning on the field. “He is in an offside position; however, in the context of football, that is a grave error on the part of Martinelli,” he stated.
“You are observing along the trajectory.” He possesses remarkable speed and agility; thus, he is not an individual who attempts to gain an advantage by marginally encroaching upon the boundaries of play.
I would be astonished if he does not receive a communication from the manager in the dressing room, as he is already aware of the situation.
It was evident on his countenance thereafter—he is aware that such an action is not permissible. The primary requirement when assessing the situation along the line is straightforward: ensure that you are not in an offside position.
Mersin commented on the ramifications of the outcome for Arsenal’s pursuit of the title, as they currently lag behind league leaders Liverpool by six points. “It is not a favorable outcome; rather, it constitutes two points relinquished,” he stated.
“They were beginning to exhibit a semblance of form, and the disallowed goal proved to be a significant setback.”
“To secure Premier League titles, it is imperative to achieve victories at venues such as Craven Cottage.” Liverpool currently possesses a match in hand, which confers a significant advantage upon them.
The Gunners have limited opportunity to reflect on their recent setback as they ready themselves for a Champions League encounter at home against Monaco on Wednesday.
Their forthcoming Premier League match is scheduled for Saturday, during which they will host Everton at the Emirates Stadium.
