Peter Leven challenges VAR call on Nygren’s Celtic winner, prompting response from Darryl Broadfoot.

Darryl Broadfoot has responded after Peter Leven questioned the VAR ruling that allowed Benjamin Nygren’s winning goal for Celtic F.C. to stand against Aberdeen F.C. at Pittodrie.

Nygren struck the decisive goal in Celtic’s 2–1 victory, scoring in the second half before the play was checked by VAR to confirm his position when the pass was made. After reviewing the incident, Leven questioned the offside graphics used during the broadcast, asking why only a single line appeared on screen instead of the two lines usually shown during offside reviews.

His remarks quickly circulated online, sparking debate among supporters about the decision.

Broadfoot later addressed the issue on social media, explaining that the graphic can display only one line when the attacker and defender are almost perfectly level. In such situations, the two lines effectively overlap, so the system shows a single marker rather than two separate ones.

When this happens, it generally indicates the attacker is level with the last defender at the moment the ball is played. According to the laws of the game, any doubt in these situations favours the attacking player.

The decision ultimately allowed Celtic’s goal to stand. With the match finishing 2–1, the strike proved crucial as it helped Celtic move above Rangers F.C. in the table while maintaining pressure on league leaders Heart of Midlothian F.C..
