Arsenal’s most recent updates prior to their Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday
Arsenal will observe a moment of silence in honour of Pope Francis prior to the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. On Tuesday, April 29, the Arsenal will play host to PSG at the Emirates Stadium, eight days prior to the second leg at the Parc des Princes.
On Monday morning, Francis, who was held in high regard by millions of Catholics worldwide, passed away in his flat in Vatican City. After suffering a stroke and ensuing heart failure, the 88-year-old pope passed away.
In a statement, the Vatican verified that his cause of death was determined by an electrocardiogram (ECG). On Saturday, thousands are anticipated to witness Francis’ funeral in Rome, Italy.
All four Serie A matches were postponed on Monday as a result of Francis’ passing. This encompassed Lazio’s visit to Genoa and Parma’s confrontation with Juventus.
A moment of silence was observed during the La Liga match between Girona and Real Betis on Monday, and it is now expected that the same will occur during the subsequent set of European fixtures.
It implies that a moment of silence and contemplation will be observed in honour of Francis prior to Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final first-leg match against PSG on the upcoming Tuesday.
UEFA issued a statement on Friday morning that read, “UEFA will observe a moment of silence in honour of His Holiness the Pope Francis prior to the commencement of the Youth League and Women’s Champions League semi-finals, as well as the men’s club competition semis, which are scheduled to take place from April 29 to May.”
Aleksander Ceferin, the president of UEFA, subsequently paid tribute to the Pope and his life. “In these times of war and hardship, Pope Francis was a beacon of hope for all humanity,” stated Ceferin.
“A humanity that will now be left without the voice of that tireless and powerful advocate who consistently defended the vulnerable, the humble, and the poor, and who pleaded for respect, acceptance, and equality. This voice aimed to achieve a peace that was always perceived as distant, yet was increasingly desired by the world’s heart.”
Arsenal’s subsequent match is scheduled for Tuesday against PSG, following their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday. After Jean-Phillippe Mateta secured a point for the Eagles, the Gunners were confined to the Emirates. Jakub Kiwior and Leandro Trossard had scored for Arteta’s team, while Eberechi Eze scored Palace’s other goal.
