Portsmouth edge towards deal for Sunderland defender to strengthen defence

Portsmouth are edging closer to securing Sunderland defender Aji Alese as they look to ease their current problems at the heart of defence.

The former West Ham United centre-back is being lined up for a loan move, with Pompey having space available in their matchday squad to complete the deal.

Alese, 25, has recently returned to training and featured at under-21 level, and has built up solid experience since joining Sunderland in 2022, making 46 appearances — the majority in the Championship.

Head coach John Mousinho has already signalled optimism that reinforcements could arrive before the weekend’s clash with West Brom.

Defensive cover has become a pressing concern, with injuries leaving options stretched in the short term.

Portsmouth also hold interest in Dundee defender Luke Graham, though the Scottish club’s own defensive shortages may complicate that pursuit. Mousinho acknowledged the balancing act the club faces — strengthening immediately while avoiding an overload of players once injured defenders return.

He explained that several players are expected back in the coming weeks, which makes the decision more complex, but stressed the need to remain flexible as situations evolve quickly during the transfer window.

While earlier in the window left-back appeared the priority, shifting circumstances have forced Pompey to reassess and react to emerging needs.
