Portsmouth manager John Mousinho hints at timely injury boost before Sheffield United test

Portsmouth suffered a narrow 1–0 loss to Preston North End on Saturday, but John Mousinho has offered encouraging news on Colby Bishop’s injury.

The striker missed the Deepdale trip after rolling his ankle during the win over West Brom at the end of January.

The 29-year-old was forced off midway through that game, with Mousinho initially expecting him to be sidelined for up to a month. Bishop was the only change to the starting lineup, as deadline-day signing Jacob Brown stepped in and impressed on his debut.

However, Bishop’s recovery has progressed well, and Mousinho is now optimistic the forward could return for next weekend’s important clash with Sheffield United. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, he said the issue is “nothing too bad” and expressed hope the striker will be available.

Pompey could also be boosted by the return of Thomas Waddingham, who has been out for five months with a quad injury.

The 20-year-old Australian is pencilled in for a comeback on February 14, potentially giving Mousinho three central attacking options.

The head coach admitted Bishop’s absence was a setback given his strong recent performances, but welcomed the added depth with Brown, Makenzie Kirk, and Waddingham returning to contention.

He also noted there is flexibility in attack, with other players capable of filling in up front.
