Newcastle United team news: Howe tipped to rotate heavily for Carabao Cup tie v Bradford City
Newcastle United begin the defence of their Carabao Cup crown on Wednesday night when they host League One leaders Bradford City. The Bantams travel north aiming for an upset, while Eddie Howe’s side will be eager to rediscover their scoring touch after being held to a goalless draw with Bournemouth at the weekend.
Howe is expected to freshen up his starting XI with a number of changes, giving opportunities to fringe players while keeping some senior figures involved.
Predicted Newcastle XI v Bradford City
-
GK – Aaron Ramsdale
Ramsdale could be handed his first start since arriving at St James’ Park, with Nick Pope likely to be rested despite an impressive run of four clean sheets in six games. -
CB – Sven Botman
Botman completed 90 minutes against Bournemouth and may keep his place to build match fitness if Dan Burn is rotated. -
LB – Kieran Trippier
Having been rested at the weekend, Trippier may return to the lineup. With Lewis Hall still easing back from injury and Tino Livramento heavily involved so far this season, Howe could turn to his experienced full-back. -
CM – Bruno Guimaraes
After his run of 68 consecutive Premier League starts came to an end, Guimaraes could return, though he may not play the full 90 as Howe manages his workload. -
CM – Lewis Miley
The teenager made his 50th senior appearance on Sunday and could notch up another milestone outing against Bradford. -
RB – Emil Krafth
Krafth has filled in across the defence, but right-back could be his role on Wednesday if Howe offers him a rare start. -
CB – Jamaal Lascelles
The club captain featured for the first time since March last weekend and may continue here. With no Champions League football ahead, this competition offers him valuable minutes. -
CM – Joelinton
Joelinton has fond memories of his previous Carabao Cup appearances and will be eager to impress again as Newcastle start their defence of the trophy. -
RW – Anthony Elanga
Still searching for his first goal in black and white, Elanga will see this fixture as a big chance to get off the mark.
