Manchester United played Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night for the last time this Premier League season (2023–24). Both teams are trying to make it to Europe.

Erik ten Hag’s team is still upset about their 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday night. Before that, they came back against Brighton & Hove Albion and tied 1-1 to earn a point.

Man United’s defense wasn’t quite as leaky as it was in their 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace last Monday. However, it wasn’t quite as leaky at Old Trafford on Sunday against Arsenal, where fans from all over the city were cheering them on.

The hosts’ weak attacks, on the other hand, were easily stopped by Mikel Arteta’s defensive masters. The Gunners went back on top thanks to a mistake by Casemiro, who illegally kept Kai Havertz onside from a long ball over the top. Leandro Trossard scored in the first half.

Because they didn’t help their noisy neighbors Manchester City, Ten Hag’s awful team is still in eighth place in the rankings, three points behind Newcastle and Chelsea with two games left to play. If results this week don’t go their way, they could be officially out of the running for the top seven.

Of course, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley would send the Red Devils to the Europa League, but the 20-time English champions will end the season with a lot of bad records no matter what. They are said to have even canceled their 2023–24 awards dinner because of their bad luck.

In fact, 19 losses across all competitions is their worst record since 1977–78, and 82 goals conceded is their worst mark in 53 years. On Wednesday, they could lose 10 games across all competitions at Old Trafford for the first time in a single season. It remains to be seen if Sir Jim Ratcliffe will fire them because of these embarrassing numbers.

Conversely, Newcastle may not play in any international competitions in 2024–25 either if their final two results are disappointing. However, Eddie Howe’s job as manager at St. James’ Park should not be in danger for the time being.

The 46-year-old had led his team to resounding wins over Championship-bound Burnley and Sheffield United before Brighton & Hove Albion came to the North East on Saturday. In a game that will go down in history, Joel Veltman and Sean Longstaff scored two goals in the first half that cancelled each other out.

On the other hand, the Magpies’ single point kept them mathematically in the running for fifth place, at least until Tottenham Hotspur plays Manchester City on Tuesday night. However, they are now only ahead of Chelsea by goal difference after the Blues beat Nottingham Forest.

However, Howe’s team would have to lose by a huge 13 goals in order to be passed by Man United on Wednesday. The Magpies will try to keep up their recent winning streak against the Red Devils, having won all three of their recent games in all competitions.

Newcastle has won two Premier League games at St. James’ Park and a 3-0 EFL Cup win at Old Trafford in that time. However, they haven’t won a Premier League game at the Theatre of Dreams since December 2013, when David Moyes was in charge of Manchester United.

Last week, Scott McTominay, Lisandro Martinez, Bruno Fernandes, and Marcus Rashford were all back to full training. However, only McTominay played in the loss to Arsenal; Fernandes and Rashford came off late, and Martinez is still getting back up to speed with the rest of his team.

Amad Diallo, who was having a great game in his first Premier League start of the season, left the game in the second half with a knee injury, which was another worry for the Red Devils. However, he played down his worries after the game and should be fine for Wednesday.

That’s more than can be said about Tyrell Malacia (knee), Victor Lindelof (thigh), Harry Maguire (muscle), Raphael Varane (muscle), Mason Mount (unspecified), and Luke Shaw (thigh). Also, Anthony Martial, who has been out for a long time with a groin injury, is still not in the gameday squad, even though he is on the practice fields.

Newcastle’s first-choice goalie Nick Pope watched the game as a substitute for the second straight game because he was still recovering from a shoulder injury. However, there were no worries during the 90 minutes against Brighton. That being said, Kieran Trippier came off the bench and could start this game.

But Callum Wilson missed the draw over the weekend because of a tight leg and isn’t sure if he will be able to go to Old Trafford. Fabian Schar is also making good progress with his thigh injury, but Howe may decide to hold off on starting him until the last game of the season.

Matt Targett (Achilles), Lewis Miley (back), Joe Willock (calf), Jamaal Lascelles (knee), and Sven Botman (knee) are still out, along with the banned Sandro Tonali. However, Howe has a lot of good choices up top, such as Harvey Barnes, Miguel Almiron, and the back-to-playing Joelinton.

The United States hopes that Bruno Fernandes will be able to play against Newcastle in the Premier League on Wednesday.

They trained with the player before Sunday’s 1-0 loss at home to Arsenal, but he wasn’t quite ready to play.

“Bruno trained for two days, but he wasn’t far enough along to get better and make the team,” boss Erik ten Hag said before the Gunners game.

Amad Diallo played well on Sunday but had to leave the game because of an illness. He said after the game that he was “fine.”

And Marcus Rashford might be involved as well. But Ten Hag is still missing a lot of important players.

The likes of Anthony Martial, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Tyrell Malacia, and Mason Mount will not play.

Lisandro Martinez is back in training, but he probably won’t be put in danger since Willy Kambwala is also back and ready to play.

Manchester United possible starting lineup:
Andre Onana; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Kambwala, Evans, Diogo Dalot; Scott McTominay, Mainoo; Antony, Burno Fernandes, Garnacho; Rasmus Hojlund

Newcastle United possible starting lineup:
Dubravka; Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Burn, Hall; Anderson, Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff; Almiron, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon
