Newcastle United vs. Liverpool: Eddie Howe needs to make a few choices about his team’s lineup for Monday night’s game against Arne Slot’s Reds.
Newcastle United and Liverpool play at St. James’ Park on Monday night in a match that looks a lot like the Carabao Cup final in March. Events this summer involving Alexander Isak, who is not expected to play on Tyneside, have made things worse between the two fan groups, and Tyneside is expected to have a very tense atmosphere.
Newcastle’s season started last weekend with a goalless draw at Villa Park. They could have easily come back with all three points if Eddie Howe had been able to start with a known scorer. Whate has had nine days to get his team ready for Liverpool’s visit on Monday night. He will also have his new player Jacob Ramsey available for the first time.
Other new signees Both Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale were reserves against Villa but did not play. They will both be pushing to start on Monday, but Howe may choose to go with a tried-and-true starting eleven for what will be one of the toughest tests his team will face in the first few months of the season. Here is a look at the starting eleven that Howe could choose for Monday night’s game against Liverpool:
Nick Pope will start in goal for Newcastle United against Liverpool. Pope kept a clean sheet at Villa Park, and even though he wasn’t pushed very often, he did make some big saves to keep the scoreless. He made a big stop to stop Curtis Jones at Wembley during a very important part of that final.
RB: Nick Trippier
Trippier played great at Wembley, and he’ll need to be even better on Monday night.
Cell phone: Fabian Schar Malick Thiaw will be eager to play, but Newcastle’s defense looked strong over the weekend, and Howe might not want to change that before Monday night’s game.
CB: Dan Burn
Burn was absolutely huge on Saturday, and he has great memories of this game. At St. James’ Park, he will be desperate to win again.
This is Tino Livramento.
Livramento played great against Mohamed Salah at Wembley, and since Lewis Hall is still getting fit, he may be asked to keep Salah quiet again on Monday night.
CM: Bruno Guimaraes
The game on Monday could be won or lost in the middle of the field, and Guimaraes will want to do well in front of his own people.
CM: Sandro Tonali
Tonali’s speed and smarts will be very important for Howe’s team to beat the Reds.
CM: John Linton
That Brazilian player Joelinton was amazing at Wembley in March, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool players still have nightmares about him. Monday’s game by Joelinton could set the tone for how his peers play.
John Elanga (RW)
After playing for Villa Park, Elanga would have been upset that he hadn’t scored a goal. He will think he has a good chance against Liverpool’s defense, which has been looking shaky lately.
Anthony Gordon Gordon has had some great games against Liverpool at St. James’ Park. He has scored both times he has played his old team on Tyneside.
LW: John Harvey Barnes
The Barnes/Livramento pairing worked great at Wembley, and I hope they can do the same thing on Monday night.
Aaron Ramsdale, Emil Krafth, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall, Jacob Ramsey, Lewis Miley, Jacob Murphy, and Will Osula were brought on as substitutes.
