The Premier League is preparing to implement regulations that prohibit the expenditure of £43 million The Newcastle United tandem will not be able to participate in the upcoming month’s match against Liverpool.

Two players remain at risk, but Newcastle United will welcome back Dan Burn from suspension at Crystal Palace on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Newcastle’s 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest resulted in Burn’s fifth booking of the Premier League season, which resulted in his absence from the 2-0 loss to West Ham United.

According to Premier League regulations, players who accumulate five infractions during the initial 19 league matches are subject to a one-game suspension.

Burn must now avoid collecting 10 yellow cards within 32 games, or he will be subject to a two-match sanction, as he has completed his suspension. In the interim,

Newcastle’s Joelinton and Fabian Schar remain at a significant danger of a ban, as they have each received four yellow cards in the first 12 league matches of the 2024-25 season. Schar was issued a yellow card for striking the ball away during Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal earlier this month.

Earlier this season, he was also suspended for three matches following a straight red card received on the opening day of the season against Southampton.

Newcastle will be unable to field Joelinton or Schar in the subsequent match against Liverpool at St James’ Park on Wednesday, should they receive a booking against Crystal Palace.

On January 4, 2025, Newcastle will play their twentieth match of the Premier League season at Tottenham Hotspur.

Lewis Hall and Sandro Tonali must avoid receiving another two yellow cards in Newcastle’s next seven matches, as they have been cautioned three times this season. Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, and Lloyd Kelly have each been cautioned twice.

The threshold is adjusted to 10 bookings, 32 games, and a two-match ban after the 19-game, five-booking, and one-match ban cut-off point. Joelinton was the final Newcastle player to receive a two-match suspension for accumulation of 10 yellow cards during the 2022-23 season.

Bruno Guimaraes appeared to be on the brink of a similar fate last season after accruing nine yellow cards. However, he was able to escape a suspension by playing 11 matches without receiving a booking, thereby surpassing the 32-game threshold.

A three-match suspension is imposed on any player who accumulates 15 bookings during the season; however, not a single Premier League campaign has ever seen such a high number of cautions.
