Rangers are planning a trio of significant additions in the January transfer window to underline their intentions

Rangers are preparing for a bold January window, with new manager Danny Röhl pushing for three significant signings to overhaul a squad that has underperformed this season.

Sources at Ibrox indicate that the club has allocated funds for at least three key additions, led by a proven striker—the top priority for Röhl after the current forwards have struggled.

A major factor in this shift is the unsuccessful £8 million summer move for Youssef Chermiti, a signing that contributed heavily to the exit of former director of football Kevin Thelwell. Thelwell promoted the deal as a long-term coup, but insiders argue that such a fee should have secured an immediate-impact player. The Chermiti misstep is widely viewed internally as a “major red flag.”

Since taking charge in November, Röhl has made it clear privately that he needs a ready-to-start No.9, not another developmental prospect.

Targets under review include established Scottish Premiership attackers and reliable scorers from the Eredivisie and Scandinavia. Funds for the rebuild have been boosted by Thelwell’s departure and expected sales of surplus players.

Alongside a striker, Rangers are monitoring options for a high-energy central midfielder and a versatile full-back who can challenge on both sides of the defence.

Recruitment push intensifies

Talks with representatives in Belgium and the Netherlands are already underway, and Röhl has personally scouted several options during the November international break.

Club insiders say the board—now operating under the 49ers’ ownership group—is fully supportive of Röhl’s ambitions and ready to invest to ensure a far stronger second half of the campaign.

With supporter frustration at its peak, January is seen as a crucial month. Failing to land the three signings Röhl wants could bring immediate strain on the new hierarchy, while securing them would signal a clear commitment to restoring Rangers’ status.
