Rangers winger Andreas Skov Olsen found himself at the centre of controversy during Sunday’s thrilling 4-2 Premiership victory over league leaders Hearts at Ibrox after being shown a yellow card for simulation.
The Danish international, who joined Danny Rohl’s squad on loan from Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg last month, is yet to consistently hit top form for the Gers, despite showing glimpses of his ability, including a goal in the recent home win over Kilmarnock.
However, Skov Olsen came under fire during the first half of the Hearts clash when he went down in the penalty area under a challenge from Islam Chesnekov.
Referee Don Robertson deemed the action to be a dive and booked the winger for simulation, sparking debate among supporters and pundits alike.
Two former Scottish Grade One referees, Des Roache and Steve Conroy, who host The Ref’s View podcast, were quick to weigh in on the incident.
Speaking from their professional perspective, both officials agreed that the caution was fully justified and emphasised the importance of maintaining integrity in the game. Taking to social media, they stated: “Skov Olsen – dive – correctly cautioned.
We need to rid the game of cheating. No matter which player or team. It is simply cheating fellow professionals. We won’t change our stance on this.”
The comments underline the continuing scrutiny on Skov Olsen, who carries high expectations following his move to Rangers for a reported £10 million.
While he has shown flashes of promise, incidents such as this highlight the pressure the 24-year-old playmaker faces to perform and uphold professional standards on the pitch.
