Rangers authorised to push ahead with transfer move as talks progress

Rangers are closing in on the signing of Sturm Graz midfielder Tochi Chukwuani, with the player now authorised to undergo a medical ahead of a move to Ibrox.

New head coach Danny Rohl has made it clear he wants fresh faces during the January transfer window, and the Gers have moved quickly to land one of their top midfield targets. Talks between Rangers and Sturm Graz have gathered pace in recent days, with Chukwuani even missing a recent friendly as negotiations intensified.

A breakthrough has now been reached, with a deal understood to be worth around €5 million, including add-ons and a sell-on clause. According to Italian journalist Luca Bendoni, Chukwuani has been given the green light to complete his medical, putting Rangers on the brink of sealing the transfer.

The 22-year-old joined Sturm Graz from Danish side Lyngby in 2024 and played a key role in their Austrian Bundesliga title-winning campaign last season. His departure is expected to be keenly felt by the Austrian champions, where he has established himself as an important first-team figure.

Rangers’ transfer activity is not expected to stop there. The Ibrox club have also made enquiries to Sunderland over midfielder Dan Neil and winger Romaine Mundle, with the latter being viewed as a potential loan signing after struggling for regular minutes this season.

However, Sunderland boss Régis Le Bris handed Mundle a start against Everton in the FA Cup on Saturday, casting some doubt over whether the winger will be allowed to leave this month. It remains unclear if that appearance signals a change in Sunderland’s stance.

With Rangers firmly back in the Scottish Premiership title race, Rohl is eager to maintain momentum despite a packed fixture list. Alongside league duties, the Gers remain involved in both the Scottish Cup and the Europa League, making squad depth a growing priority as January unfolds.
