Rangers captain James Tavernier insists he still has plenty of years left in his playing career, even as he enters the final 12 months of his current deal at Ibrox. The skipper admits his long-term future remains uncertain but says his focus is firmly on the present and maintaining his high standards.
Tavernier said:
“I try not to look too far ahead. What I can control is what I do today — coming into training, pushing myself, and aiming to be better than I was yesterday. That’s where my focus is. I still feel I’ve got many years ahead of me. My legs feel great, and I’m as hungry as ever.”
He added that his competitive spirit remains as strong as ever:
“Whether it’s on the pitch, playing with my kids, or even on the PlayStation with my brother, I always want to win. That desire never goes away, and it never will.”
Tavernier’s comments come ahead of Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Celtic, a fixture he knows well.
“These games always start at a crazy tempo,” he said. “It can take your breath away, especially for players experiencing it for the first time. I always tell the lads to stay calm and stick to the manager’s plan. I have full belief in the team and the players selected — it’s about giving them confidence, belief, and that extra push to perform.”
