Rangers Target Kilmarnock Midfielder David Watson Ahead of January Window
Glasgow Rangers boss Danny Rohl is gearing up for his first real chance to shape the squad when the January transfer window opens next month.
The German coach arrived after the summer market had already closed, meaning he has been working solely with a squad assembled by previous managers and sporting directors.
With an impressive start of five wins and two draws from his opening seven Premiership matches, excitement is building over what Rohl could achieve once he’s able to bring in players he personally approves.
According to FootballTransfers, Rangers are “pushing” to secure a deal for Kilmarnock midfielder David Watson in January.
The Scotland U21 international is out of contract at the end of the season, and Rangers are looking to capitalise on the situation by making him Rohl’s first signing. Kilmarnock are reportedly open to selling the 20-year-old this winter rather than losing him for free in the summer, though the fee they will demand is still unclear.
Rangers Face Competition for Watson
Watson is said to be Rangers’ top target for the upcoming window. However, the Ibrox side will face strong competition from Lazio and Celtic, meaning the deal may not be straightforward.
After recruiting heavily from England in the summer, the Light Blues are now turning their attention to domestic options to strengthen the midfield.
Why David Watson Fits Rohl’s Plans
With Mohamed Diomande set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations later this month, Watson could arrive at a perfect moment to fill the gap in midfield. Diomande will be away until Ivory Coast complete their tournament run, giving any new arrival a chance to stake a claim for a starting place.
Scottish scout and analyst Kai Watson has described the Kilmarnock youngster as a “box-crashing, goalscoring midfielder who works tirelessly on both sides of the ball.”
So far this season, Watson has scored three goals and created two big chances in the Premiership (Sofascore), compared to Diomande’s single goal and one big chance created.
On current form, Watson brings more direct goal involvement and attacking output from midfield.
Based on their league performances to date, the Kilmarnock talent could realistically slot into Rohl’s side and offer a strong contribution right away, particularly during Diomande’s absence.
