Rangers FC issue firm stance over free deal amid interest from Coventry City and Ipswich Town

Rangers FC reject Jesse Lingard approach as Coventry and Ipswich pass on free deal

Rangers have reportedly turned down the opportunity to open talks with free agent Jesse Lingard, opting against a potential reunion with the former England international.

Despite a turbulent start to the season, the Gers resisted the urge to panic in January. Backed by the 49ers ownership group, manager Danny Rohl was strengthened with additions such as Andreas Skov Olsen, Ryan Naderi, Tuur Rommens and Tochi Chukwuani — signings designed for the long term rather than short-term fixes.

That measured approach appears to have continued, with Rangers declining the chance to pursue Lingard when discussions were offered over a free transfer. According to reports, several Championship clubs — including Ipswich Town and Coventry City — were also presented with the opportunity but chose not to proceed. Lingard is now expected to consider a move to Brazil instead.

49ers backing a different vision

Under the 49ers’ stewardship, Rangers have shown a willingness to be decisive in the market. The club are reportedly exploring ambitious summer targets, including former loanee Lassana Coulibaly, who impressed during his 2018/19 stint at Ibrox.

There has also been speculation over a potential return for Todd Cantwell, whose contract situation at Blackburn Roversremains unresolved amid reported wage demands.

However, Lingard’s situation suggests Rangers are prioritising long-term strategy over high-profile free agents. At 33, the former Manchester United midfielder finds himself at a crossroads after spells abroad and is now weighing up his next move.

For Rangers, the message appears clear: no panic buys, no sentiment — only calculated moves aligned with their rebuild.
