Rangers FC have officially confirmed the international call-up of Emmanuel Fernandez, validating reports that first surfaced back in February.
The announcement was made via the club’s official X account, recognising the defender’s impressive rise since arriving at Ibrox.
Fernandez joined Rangers from Peterborough United last summer in a deal worth £3.5 million, and he has quickly established himself as a key figure in the team. His standout performances have not gone unnoticed, with interest reportedly building from top clubs including Chelsea FC and Arsenal FC ahead of the summer window.
Back in February, reports from Nigeria suggested the 24-year-old had chosen to represent the Super Eagles at international level, despite also being eligible for England. That speculation has now been confirmed.
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has named Fernandez in his squad for the upcoming international break, marking the centre-back’s first senior call-up. Rangers were quick to congratulate the defender, highlighting the milestone achievement.
Fernandez is understood to have held discussions with Chelle before making his decision, ultimately committing his international future to Nigeria and turning down the chance to represent England.
With an international debut now potentially on the horizon, attention is already turning to his future at club level.
If Fernandez indicates a desire to move on, Rangers could be in a strong position to maximise his value. The club may even look to trigger a bidding war given the growing interest from across Europe.
One potential drawback is Nigeria’s absence from the upcoming World Cup, as strong performances on that stage often boost player valuations. Even so, Rangers are expected to demand a significant profit—potentially several times the fee they paid just a year ago.
There is also internal hope of keeping him longer, with figures at the club keen for him to remain at Ibrox for at least another season.
Former Peterborough figure Barry Fry has even suggested Fernandez could command a fee in the region of £40 million, backing him to enjoy a hugely successful career.
With reported interest from elite European sides, including Bayern Munich, Rangers currently hold the upper hand as they weigh up their next move.
