Rangers have been linked with a surprise option to take over from Kevin Thelwell, at the same time Celtic are reportedly targeting a player connected to Wilfried Nancy

The latest headlines from Glasgow continue to focus on Rangers and Celtic as both clubs navigate major changes ahead of the January window.

Rangers remain in transition after parting ways with CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell. Attention has quickly shifted to who might step in as Thelwell’s replacement, and a familiar face has unexpectedly entered the conversation.

According to Football Insider, Barry Ferguson has emerged as a candidate for the sporting director role. The former Rangers captain and one-time interim boss is reportedly admired by the Ibrox hierarchy and is under consideration—though his inclusion on the shortlist is viewed as something of a “surprise.”

Despite Ferguson’s strong ties to the club, the report notes it is still “unlikely” he ultimately takes the job, even if he hasn’t formally withdrawn his interest.

As Pete O’Rourke put it, “I was surprised as well when I saw Barry Ferguson’s name linked with the role of sporting director at Rangers.”

Meanwhile on the other side of Glasgow, Celtic are preparing for the arrival of Wilfried Nancy as their next full-time manager. With negotiations progressing, Football Insider also claims the club is looking at potential signings connected to the French coach’s time at the Columbus Crew.

One name being explored is striker Wessam Abou Ali, who joined Columbus in July and was personally signed by Nancy.

If Celtic complete Nancy’s appointment and proceed with backroom changes, the 25-year-old could become a realistic January target.

O’Rourke added: “Wessam Abou Ali was signed by Nancy when he was at Columbus Crew…

Rangers need to get this next appointment right. Barry Ferguson is a legend at Rangers, but he may not have the experience required for a sporting director role.”
