Rangers make decision on potential move to bring Nobel Mendy to Ibrox

Rangers rule out renewed move for Nobel Mendy despite La Liga success

Rangers have reportedly decided against reigniting their interest in Senegalese defender Nobel Mendy, despite his impressive performances in Spain with Rayo Vallecano.

The Ibrox side appeared close to signing the 21-year-old during the summer transfer window, but the move collapsed late on due to medical concerns. As a result, Rangers turned their attention to Derek Cornelius, who joined the club on loan instead.

According to The Daily Record, the club’s recruitment team, led by Kevin Thelwell, has now ruled out making another approach for Mendy. This comes even as the young centre-back continues to shine in La Liga — helping Vallecano keep a clean sheet against Real Madrid at the weekend and earning “rave reviews” for his recent displays.

Despite rumours suggesting Rangers could revisit a move, Mendy is understood to be settled in Spain and is no longer on the club’s radar.

Thelwell, already under scrutiny for Rangers’ recruitment struggles — and his decision to appoint his son within the scouting department — faces growing pressure from supporters. The inconsistent form of new signings such as Youssef Chermiti has only added to fan frustration.

While some may view the decision to walk away from Mendy as overly cautious, particularly given the team’s shaky defensive displays, others will argue the club was right to heed medical warnings after recent injury setbacks. Even so, Mendy’s success abroad is likely to leave some wondering what might have been had his Rangers move gone through.
