Rangers’ next sporting director: Initial favourite revealed with ex-Brighton, Everton, and Leeds decision-makers leading the race

Rangers are considering a former Brighton figure for a key role at the club as they look to restructure their leadership.

The Scottish giants recently parted ways with CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell following widespread supporter frustration. The duo had faced intense criticism after a poor start to the season, during which Rangers managed just one win from their first eight league matches and suffered seven straight defeats in European competition. Much of the blame was also directed at a summer recruitment strategy that fans found underwhelming.

Since Danny Rohl replaced Russell Martin as manager last month, the team’s domestic form has shown signs of improvement. Nevertheless, Rangers’ American owners moved quickly to remove Stewart and Thelwell in a bid to get the club back on track.

The early favourite for a replacement role is former Brighton director David Weir, who is currently at Strasbourg. Weir, 55, is well-acquainted with Rangers, having made 162 appearances for the club between 2007 and 2012. His playing career also included spells at Everton, Hearts, and Falkirk.

Weir joined Brighton in 2018 as pathway development manager and succeeded Dan Ashworth as the club’s technical director in May 2022. He departed Albion in 2025 when Jason Ayto, formerly of Arsenal, was appointed to the position. Other potential candidates include former Brighton director Dan Ashworth and ex-Leeds United executive Victor Orta.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chairman Parag Marathe are leading the search for new executives “that align with the vision for the next chapter” of the club. Among the candidates reportedly in contention:

  1. Kevin Thelwell – former Rangers sporting director

  2. Ally McCoist – former Rangers striker

  3. Dan Ashworth – ex-Brighton, Newcastle, and Manchester United director (15/1)

  4. Luke Dowling – former West Brom executive (12/1)
