Wrexham have entered the race to sign Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell as the winter transfer window heads towards its conclusion.
Rothwell has been widely tipped to leave Ibrox this month after failing to secure regular minutes since his arrival last summer. Sheffield United and Derby County were already credited with interest in the 31-year-old, who has made only five Scottish Premiership starts this season.
Now, ambitious Championship side Wrexham have emerged as another contender for his signature.
Multiple clubs monitoring Rothwell situation
When Rothwell joined Rangers, his signing was viewed as a smart piece of business given his role in Leeds United’s promotion campaign. However, his time in Glasgow has not gone to plan. He has featured for just a single minute of competitive action since early November, with manager Danny Rohl seemingly overlooking him.
According to Alan Nixon, reporting via his Patreon platform, Wrexham are the latest club considering a move. The Welsh club are looking to add depth as they continue their push for promotion up the English football ladder.
Rangers, meanwhile, are said to be open to letting Rothwell depart for a reduced fee. His salary has previously complicated potential deals, but that may not deter Wrexham should they decide to firm up their interest.
More departures expected at Ibrox
It is unlikely Rothwell’s exit would significantly impact Rangers on the pitch. The midfielder has been absent from match action for nearly three months and has struggled to influence matters when involved.
From a financial perspective, moving him on would ease the wage bill, even if it means accepting a lower transfer return. He may not be the only one heading out of Govan before the deadline.
Youngster Findlay Curtis is another expected to depart, with Rohl confirming after Thursday’s defeat to Porto that a loan decision would be made within 48 hours.
Forward Danilo also appears close to the exit door, having travelled to the Netherlands as he edges towards a move back to the Eredivisie.
With the deadline fast approaching, Rangers look set for a busy end to the window as they reshape the squad.
