Rangers poised to make FC Volendam defender their opening January signing after Tom English revelation

Rangers could benefit from bringing in a defender like FC Volendam centre-back Xavier Mbuyamba, particularly after recent struggles in the Europa League.

Danny Röhl’s side were undone by defensive lapses in their defeat to Ferencváros at the Groupama Stadium on 11 December, as the hosts came from behind to claim victory. Those errors have underlined the need for reinforcements at the back, with the January transfer window fast approaching.

Mbuyamba has been linked with a move to Ibrox, and the highly rated youngster — who has drawn comparisons to Virgil van Dijk — is believed to be on Rangers’ radar. With Andrew Cavenagh seemingly prepared to support Röhl in the market, the Netherlands Under-19 international could emerge as one of the first additions under the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.

There is an expectation that Rangers will be active once the window opens. BBC Sport journalist Tom English has suggested the club’s hierarchy are planning a strong push to strengthen the squad, following recent performances that exposed weaknesses across several areas.

Defensive reinforcements appear especially urgent, with Nasser Djiga and Emmanuel Fernandez struggling to convince, making centre-back a key focus for the Glasgow club.

English revealed he had been told to expect transfer movement at Ibrox in the coming weeks. Mbuyamba was previously identified as a serious target during the summer, but sporting director Kevin Thelwell ultimately pursued alternative options at the time.

Speaking on Hotline Live on 16 July, Keith Jackson also discussed the 23-year-old, cautioning against overblown comparisons.

“There are lots of comparisons being made, and I don’t think calling him the next Van Dijk is helpful,” Jackson said.
“Is he someone Rangers are keeping a close eye on? Possibly. Have talks taken place or a deal been pushed? Not that I’m aware of.”

Elsewhere, Rangers could look to raise funds by offloading Djeidi Gassama, while a potential January exit for Youssef Chermiti may also be considered if the club decides to reinvest in a more reliable goalscorer.

With key decisions looming both in and out of the squad, developments at Ibrox over the coming weeks are set to be closely monitored.
