Rangers reveal approach to Jens Hjerto-Dahl transfer with January move possible

Rangers’ interest in Jens Hjerto-Dahl is genuine, according to The Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack.

The Tromsø midfielder has been repeatedly linked with a move to Ibrox, with Danny Rohl eager to strengthen his midfield options during the January transfer window. Jack has confirmed that Rangers have been closely monitoring the Norwegian prospect and have tracked him for some time.

The expectation is that Hjerto-Dahl will leave Norway when the market reopens, although it remains unclear whether Rangers will ultimately secure his signature, with several European clubs also believed to be interested.

Would Hjerto-Dahl be the right fit for Rangers?

Rangers are in need of more physicality and control in the centre of the park, and Hjerto-Dahl could help address both shortcomings. However, despite Rangers’ interest, Jack remains uncertain whether Govan will be the player’s next destination due to the level of competition for him.

The 20-year-old already carries a growing reputation within Scandinavian football. Former Norway under-18s coach Luis Pimenta spoke highly of Hjerto-Dahl back in 2023 following matches against Sweden and Denmark, highlighting his maturity and leadership qualities.

Speaking on The Rangers Review on 24 December, Pimenta said:
“On Dahl, yes, there is interest from Rangers. He is someone they have been tracking for a while and they looked at him in the summer. I think he will move next month — whether that’s to Rangers or not remains to be seen. On the pitch, he has great physical attributes and a calm presence on the ball. He is a future leader.”

Standing at 6ft 4in, Hjerto-Dahl would provide the steel and presence that Rangers’ midfield has lacked at times this season. However, any deal is unlikely to come cheap.

Tromsø are understood to be seeking a fee in excess of £3.5 million, though that figure could represent good value if the midfielder helps transform Rangers’ fortunes. The Light Blues were exposed for a lack of physicality and poor distribution in their defeat to Hearts, with Mohamed Diomande, Nico Raskin and Connor Barron all struggling to impose themselves — areas where Hjerto-Dahl could make an immediate impact.

With 49ers Enterprises and chairman Andrew Cavenagh already demonstrating a willingness to invest following a £20 million net spend in the summer, another significant outlay may not be ruled out.

Midfield is not Rangers’ only issue, but it remains a major one — and the Norway under-21 international could prove to be a key part of the solution.
