Rangers sporting director Kevin Thelwell addresses January recruitment plans and the search for a new manager

Rangers sporting director Kevin Thelwell says he is “very pleased” with the early impact of head coach Danny Rohl.

The German, appointed last month, has won all three of his league matches so far, and although Rangers have suffered defeats to Brann, Celtic, and Roma, Thelwell is encouraged by the direction of travel.

Speaking to RangersTV, he praised Rohl and his staff for how they’ve handled a difficult situation: “He’s done really well. He and his staff are great people. It’s never easy stepping into circumstances like these, but I think we’ve made a strong start.

We weren’t moving in the right direction previously, and that’s why the change had to be made. There’s a noticeable difference in how we’re playing now.”

Rohl has stated his desire to add a local coach with strong knowledge of Scottish football to his backroom team. On that front, Thelwell said: “Watch this space,” noting that the break in the schedule gives the club more time to explore options.

Thelwell also reiterated the importance of giving Scottish talent opportunities at the club. “My philosophy has always been that before you go out and sign players, you should look at your own academy first,” he said. Local players, he added, often have a natural connection to the club, though patience is required as young players take time to mature. He referenced Jarrad Branthwaite from his Everton tenure as an example of the rewards of nurturing youth.

With the January window approaching after a turbulent season, Rangers are preparing to be active. Thelwell stressed that new coach Rohl will play a central role in transfer decisions. “We’ve had a big meeting this week discussing his assessment of the squad and the areas we believe can be improved. From here, we’ll combine his insights with feedback from ownership and other sources to shape our January plans. We expect to be fairly busy. Ultimately, Danny will have the final say.”
