Rangers transfer strategy for January comes to light alongside 49ers claim

Barry Ferguson believes Rangers are set for an active January transfer window as the club looks to strengthen Danny Rohl’s squad.

The former Rangers captain, who served as interim manager during the latter part of last season, says chairman Andrew Cavenagh is prepared to support the head coach when the transfer market opens.

Speaking on Go Radio, Ferguson revealed he expects significant movement in and out of Ibrox. He suggested Cavenagh will back Rohl as much as possible, while also acknowledging that some departures are inevitable.

Ferguson stressed the importance of targeting players who can make an immediate impact, rather than simply adding squad depth. He warned against the assumption that Scottish football is easy to adapt to, describing it as a demanding environment where experience of the league can be crucial.

He pointed to the large influx of players during the summer — including several loan signings — and argued that any new arrivals in January must clearly improve the starting XI. According to Ferguson, Rangers cannot afford to sign players just to fill gaps.

The January transfer window opens next Thursday, with Rangers scheduled to face Motherwell and St Mirren in their remaining league fixtures beforehand.
