Reason behind why Southampton fans chanted ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning at Nathan Jones as the saints won 5 -1 against Charlton

Southampton Fans Chant at Nathan Jones During 5-1 Rout of Charlton

Southampton supporters didn’t hold back against former boss Nathan Jones, chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning” as the Saints ran riot against his Charlton side. Under interim manager Tonda Eckert, Southampton raced into a four-goal lead within 22 minutes at the Valley, with goals from Ryan Manning, Adam Armstrong, Caspar Jander, and Finn Azaz coming in just eight first-half minutes. Azaz added a fifth before halftime, putting Charlton in disarray.

What Happened to Nathan Jones at Southampton?

Jones was dismissed after just four months in charge at St Mary’s, leaving the club bottom of the Premier League. During his 95-day tenure, he lost nine of 15 games, contributing to Southampton’s eventual relegation. Since then, he has rebuilt his career at Charlton, leading the Addicks to promotion to the Championship in the 2024/25 season.

Charlton entered the match in ninth place, aiming to push into the play-off spots, but the clash quickly turned disastrous for Jones as his former employers dominated. Asked about the fans’ chants after the game, Jones admitted there was little he could do, responding: “What else can you do?” Lloyd Jones pulled one back for Charlton late in the first half, but it did little to reverse the nightmare first 45 minutes.

Saints’ Recent Management Changes

The Saints had also recently parted ways with manager Will Still in November, just five months after his three-year appointment, following a poor start that left Southampton 21st in the Championship. German coach Tonda Eckert, previously the Under-21s boss, stepped in as interim manager. Under Eckert, Southampton has picked up three wins from three games, climbing to 14th place and providing a bright spark after a turbulent start to the season.
