Reason why Brighton was not given a penalty kick after alleged handball from Levi Colwill during Chelsea vs Brighton match VAR confusion duely explanied
Brighton and Hove Albion’s late penalty claim against Chelsea was clarified, clearing up any uncertainty concerning the video assistant referee.
An exciting match between Chelsea and Brighton took place at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Chelsea finally got their much-needed win thanks to two goals from Enzo Fernandez and one from Levi Colwill. The final score was 3-2.
The Seagulls’ goal scorers were Facundo Buonanotte and Joao Pedro.
Referee Craig Pawson gave Brighton a penalty at the game’s finish after claiming Colwill had committed a handball.
The penalty was reversed, though, because a video assistant referee review confirmed that the ball had struck Colwill’s face.
Everyone, even the Brighton players, were taken aback when the match began with a drop ball.
It ought to have been a corner, according to Brighton players, who claimed the ball had touched Colwill before going behind.
The choice to start the match with a drop ball was really made by the referee, as was later explained.
According to the existing rules, a drop ball must be used in order to continue the match following an overturned VAR ruling.
Ben Jacobs, a journalist, took to social media to clarify Brighton’s injury-time penalty appeal. Despite the obvious impact on Levi Colwill’s face, Craig Pawson decided to award the penalty.
He was thereafter directed to the monitor for review and, as was justified, to rectify the decision. According to the rules, it’s a drop ball instead of a Brighton corner as the decision was turned around.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino questioned the judgment, asking, “Why did they give the penalty and then check VAR [for the Colwill handball]?” The rationale behind it is puzzling. The purpose is not to be critical or complain. Why was the penalty for Mudryk’s handball delayed until the video review was completed? Our usage of VAR can be somewhat peculiar at times.
“However, following a victory, we must feel joy.”
