A three-time Pro Bowler who has expressed his desire to be a member of the Lions in 2025 could potentially address the team’s remaining conspicuous defensive need.
A well-known individual is still in pursuit of a return to the Detroit Lions for the 2025 season.
Last season, the Lions acquired Za’Darius Smith prior to the deadline in order to enhance their pass rush following the injury that ended Aidan Hutchinson’s season.
Smith was released this offseason, despite his impressive performance during his time with the Lions.
Smith expressed his desire to rejoin the Lions this offseason during an interview with USA Today at the BET Awards.
“We both know where I want to be,” he stated in an interview with USA Today. I am optimistic that I will be able to return to Detroit, as the coaching staff and all members of the front office are exceptional. I experience a sense of leadership and the ability to inspire the younger generation to achieve great things while I am present. I am optimistic that I will be able to return to my desired position in Detroit.
Smith has previously disclosed his sentiments regarding his participation with the Lions.
In an Instagram post from January, he expressed his intention to remain with the team for the 2025 season.
Around that same period, he also had a Lions Super Bowl ring fabricated.
Smith was ultimately released in order to conserve contract space; however, there was optimism that the Lions would ultimately re-sign him.
Smith has been a free agent for months, and the Lions have yet to secure a replacement.
He is an apparent candidate to fulfill one of the team’s most critical requirements. Hutchinson continues to be the sole challenge on the roster from the outside.
Money has been the sole concern. According to general manager Brad Holmes, the team was unable to afford Smith.
This is expected to change as we progress further into the offseason, as Smith remains available.
I am optimistic that the two parties will be able to reach a resolution soon, as it is evident that Smith is interested in a position on the team and that his inclusion would address the team’s sole remaining defense need.
This is a decision that should be made prior to Smith’s decision to contract with another team if they are truly committed to competing for a Super Bowl in 2025.
