Manchester City
Reason why Jack Grealish was not happy with his subtitution during the West Ham United vs. Manchester City match on Saturday (1-3)
These are the parts of Manchester City’s win over West Ham at the London Stadium that you might have missed.
When Manchester City beat West Ham on Saturday, Erling Haaland stole the news from anyone else who was thinking about taking the back pages.
Pep Guardiola says that his good start to the season is because he hasn’t been hurt for more than a year. He scored his second hat-trick of the season, his 11th at City, and his 97th goal overall. A scary thought for anyone on the other side.
But there were a lot of great efforts before Haaland. Some of them are Rico Lewis, Bernardo Silva, and Kevin De Bruyne. City went into the international break at the top of the table, and they will be very happy with their position, especially since Guardiola said the first few games would be tough because so many players were coming back late in the summer.
Grealish is upset with the change.
In a crazy first half, Jack Grealish should have scored or set up a goal. He linked up well with Kevin De Bruyne on the left side. At times, Grealish switched places with De Bruyne, coming inside as a number 10 on the left side while De Bruyne hugged the sideline. It wouldn’t have been possible without Grealish, even though De Bruyne got praise for playing all over the field.
After getting hurt before the Community Shield at the worst possible time, this was his first game of the season. But Savinho’s illness gave him a chance to get back in, and he did well. It may not have been a surprise that he was taken off because he hadn’t played much. in the second half.
Grealish seemed to be upset about something on the field because he kept pointing back to it. It wasn’t the change itself that made him angry. He has every right to be upset about the decision, but Guardiola will be pleased with how he played overall on Saturday.
At the end of the game, Grealish kept making his point in front of the City fans, while Guardiola tried to give more reasons for his choice. When the game was over, both players shook hands.
Pep was stressed.
Guardiola often looks around an away ground before the game starts. It’s been a long time since he last lost a league game at the London Stadium, or any game really. But West Ham has already slowed City down, and they were stopped in 2022 in the second-to-last game of their title run, which meant Liverpool could have passed them.
Before his players came out to warm up on Saturday, Guardiola sat in his chair and looked stressed for about 10 minutes. He would sometimes talk to security or coaching staff, but mostly he would just stare into space. He may have spent the morning trying to get into the line for Oasis tickets, but he always looked tense and never really seemed happy.
Guardiola is usually very animated on the bench. He kicks every ball and gets down on his knees when the other team attacks. But this seemed like a deeper worry, so he was thrilled when City held on for a huge three points.
Haaland tells City fans to have fun.
Because Erling Haaland knew he had timed his run just right, he celebrated when he scored his third goal. But a quick VAR check gave West Ham fans hope for a break before the end of the game.
But that check didn’t last long. The ref gave the go-ahead to Haaland because he was onside before the big screens in the stadium told the fans what was going on. With two arms raised in the air, he told the City fans that they could start their trip to Poznan knowing that they had already won.
De Bruyne’s corner kicks almost pay off.
During the game against Ipswich, De Bruyne told his teammates to gather in the six-yard box for a corner kick. Bernardo Silva then quietly made his way to the penalty area. De Bruyne passed the ball behind the defense to Bernardo, who was ready to shoot, but the perfect play didn’t work out as planned as Bernardo missed the goal.
They tried again at West Ham, and this time Bernardo went over while being pushed. De Bruyne sent another warning before he and Grealish played a one-two in the corner of the box in the first half. The Belgian was about to cross, but instead curled a hard shot toward the goal, and Alphonse Areola just barely moved his feet to uncomfortably punch the ball out.
City is proud of the set piece work that coach Carlos Vicens has helped them do. It looks like they have been using their extra time on the training field at the start of the season to work on some creative routines.
