Newcastle United
Reason why Newcastle United FC player Alexander Isak that can win Erling Haaland in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot
Last year, the Newcastle United star scored 33 goals, which was third most in the Premier League.
Could this be the year that a Newcastle United player finally wins the Premier League Golden Boot? The last time a player in black and white won the individual award was in 1997.
One guess about who will win is enough for anyone. His 25 goals in 1996–97 were only the second time a Magpies player won the award.
Andy Cole was the first. He scored 34 goals in the 1993–94 season, which was a lot. In the league standings from last year, Erling Haaland scored 27 goals, putting him in first place, and Cole Palmer of Chelsea came in second with 22 goals, putting him in third place.
The Swedish forward is becoming more famous at St. James’ Park and is quickly becoming one of the most feared front men in football. It would be a big step to claim Golden Boot if you believe those things.
But why this time of year? What makes you think that Haaland’s unstoppable run of goals will end?
There isn’t much to say, but Isak’s Premier League goals dropped from 34 in 2022/23 to 27 last season. I’m sure this will be his best season yet at St. James’ Park. The fact that Arsenal and Chelsea were interested in the 24-year-old player this summer only shows how good he is.
Isak scored the second most goals per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season, but he only played in 16 games. Haaland scored the most goals per 90 minutes, with 0.95.
There are a lot of similarities between the two forwards going into the 2024–25 season. Both players had a summer break because Sweden and Norway didn’t make it to EURO 2024, and they both got right back to work in preseason.
However, Man City will be competing for four trophies again this season. On the other hand, Newcastle’s close call with European football could help Isak in his own quest for the golden boot and in the team’s quest for Champions League football. During the 2022–23 season, we saw how good they could be when all of their players were healthy. In theory, fewer games should mean fewer injuries and tiredness.
With Callum Wilson and Will Osula in backup, Howe can rest his team and change things up. You don’t have to enter Isak in every game.
On the other hand, City has fewer choices up front now that Julian Alvarez has left. Maybe Haaland needs more playing time? If the Norwegian gets hurt because he plays in more games, Isak can use that to his advantage.
Naturally, it would be wrong not to talk about the Swede’s injury history since coming to St. James’ Park. Last season, he hurt his hip, but it wasn’t as bad as the problem he had with his thigh in 2022–23.
A lot of this discussion is based on assumptions, but aren’t all pre-season predictions? As long as Newcastle gets more assists from their right wingers, either by adding someone new or having Jacob Murphy keep up his great preseason form, Isak should do well.
His partnership with Anthony Gordon on the left is scary when both players are on the ball. If Howe can open the right wing in the same way, the Isak could score six more goals over the course of a season and tie Haaland’s record.
Isak is one of the best players in the Premier League at his position when he has the ball in his hands. He helps Newcastle press from the front, run in behind, and be a threat all over the field.
As proof, StatsBomb data shows that Isak had the most on-ball value data of any singer last season. You can watch a short movie here to help you understand.
When you think about how badly Newcastle and the Swedish striker beat Tottenham Hotspur at home, you can see how good Isak is. Keeping him from getting hurt will help Newcastle a lot this season.
