Sheffield Wednesday’s nightmare start to the Championship season has left them rooted to the foot of the table — and now fresh problems off the pitch could make matters even worse.
Background: Reports have revealed that players have not been paid their wages on time for months. By early August, the arrears had already stretched to four or five months, and the situation has still not been resolved.
According to Sky Sports, the club now faces the prospect of a points deduction due to the ongoing debt. It is the fifth time in seven months that salaries have been delayed.
The backlog has also given players the legal right to terminate their contracts unilaterally — a clause which has already been triggered by 16 members of the squad.
