Celtic are edging closer to appointing a new manager, with Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy reportedly in advanced talks to take over at Parkhead. Nancy, a French coach, has emerged as the top candidate for the Premiership champions, following Brendan Rodgers’ surprising resignation more than three weeks ago after Celtic’s defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle just before the international break.
Despite the club moving quickly to secure a successor, former Chelsea and Everton player Pat Nevin has suggested that David Moyes remains a manager who is virtually guaranteed to lead Celtic at some point in the future. Nevin, who has known Moyes since their teenage years and played alongside him in Scotland, described Moyes as a natural fit for the Hoops and said that his destiny has always seemed to point toward managing the Glasgow giants.
Speaking to CasinoHawks, Nevin explained that the reason Moyes has not yet taken charge at Celtic comes down entirely to timing. “It’s purely about timing,” Nevin said. “There are two jobs that David Moyes was made for. I think Scotland was the second one, but the number one was Celtic. He and I came through Celtic together as kids, so we’ve known each other since I was 13 or 14. He’s had ‘manager’ written across his forehead his entire life.”
Nevin recalled Moyes’ leadership qualities from a young age, noting that even as a 15-year-old captain, he already stood out as a natural leader. “When he was 15, you could actually see it because he was captain, obviously, but coming through he was just that type. He just looked like somebody who should have been Celtic manager, but the timing has never been quite right,” Nevin said.
There were moments in the past when Moyes would have eagerly accepted the Celtic job, but either the club already had a successful manager in place or Moyes himself was unavailable. Nevin emphasized that whenever the opportunity and timing align, Moyes would take the role in an instant. “There were times when he would have taken it, I’m sure, absolutely, but Celtic had a manager in place who was doing well. And then the times when he wasn’t available to do it himself, he would have taken it in a millisecond,” Nevin added.
While Celtic appear to be moving forward with Nancy as their immediate appointment, Nevin’s comments underline the strong belief that Moyes is likely to manage the Scottish champions in the future, with timing being the only factor that has prevented it from happening so far.
