Rodri, a star player for Manchester City, has been banned for one game for what he said after Spain won the competition.
Rodri and Alvaro Morata have been banned for one match by UEFA for a chant they used while Spain was celebrating winning the European Championship.
Rodri, a star player for Manchester City, was named the tournament’s best player after Spain beat England in the final last month to win a big trophy. His coach and many of his teammates want him to win this year’s Ballon d’Or. But during their celebrations, he and Morata caused a stir when they yelled to a crowd, “Gibraltar is Spanish!”
UEFA was told about the event by the Gibraltar FA, and now the governing body of European football has decided that the players should be punished for what they did. They got in trouble with UEFA’s control, ethics, and discipline body for “failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, for violating the basic rules of decent conduct, for using sporting events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature and for bringing the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute.”
Both of them have been banned from the next official UEFA game because of this. But that only applies to their national team, so Rodri won’t miss any of City’s Champions League games because he’s suspended. Instead, he will miss Spain’s September 5 game in Serbia.
Rodri hasn’t gone back to the City Football Academy yet since his time with Spain this summer, and the club hasn’t gone out and bought anyone to fill his spot, which seems like it would be a good idea.
