RED CARD: Scottish former professional football player Graeme Souness gives verdict on Lundstram foul incident against Alistair Johnston during Celtic F.C win vs Rangers

The Celtic supporters have enjoyed the past few days. The Glasgow Derby victory brings Brendan Rodgers within one point of claiming a second league championship.

If Celtic emerge victorious against Kilmarnock in midweek, then the Hoops manager will be able to appreciate Saturday’s match against St Mirren while Rodgers can have an enjoyable time without anyone taking offense.

But had Celtic not triumphed over Rangers on Saturday, the week might have been marginally more precarious.

Rodgers’ squad, however, rose to the occasion, and in addition to claiming all three points despite John Lundstram’s red card, the Hoops made this week one filled with anticipation rather than apprehension.

However, it was Graeme Souness’s apparent implication regarding the red card that captured my attention the most, as the former Rangers manager struggled to accept the reality of another Celtic Glasgow Derby victory.

Alistair Johnston transformed Lundstram tackling into a “meal.”

Souness was offering his assessment of the outcome on talkSPORT this morning when he made this peculiar implication regarding the involvement of Alistair Johnston in Lundstram’s red card.

Souness stated [talkSPORT], “In the modern game, I believe the sending off was a sending off.” He has a fraction of a second to consider the matter.

“He considers himself the favorite, but the allure is excessive.

“He went to ground, and if you do the same today, you put everything at risk.” It will be a banquet for whoever you confront.

“By no means am I criticizing the Celtic fullback, whose name eludes me, but that is the case throughout the entire game in every country where it is viewed.”

Souness was not ‘critical’ of Johnston; therefore, why even bring it up? That was an all-day red-card assault.

Souness and former Rangers striker Kenny Miller appear to be the only apologists who maintain an uncertain stance regarding the red card.

VAR made the correct decision by requesting that Willie Collum reassess the assault. I have repeatedly viewed it, and each time I notice, the tackle appears worse.

There is an absence of contention, and I am certain that Souness, upon further examination, will ascertain that the sole individual who benefited from that challenge was Lundstram, who rashly dove in while wearing high studs on the ankle of the Celtic fullback.
