Tyleik Williams, the first-round pick of the Detroit Lions, seems to have already changed his shirt number to something he likes.
The Detroit Lions picked Tyleik Williams in the first round, and he wore number 78 during rookie minicamp. People asked him why he was wearing that number, which he didn’t do in college. It was clear that he didn’t want to rock 78.
“I was going for 91, but it was already taken,” Williams said. “But I hope I can get out of 78.” It’s 78 degrees right now, which I don’t want. I’m going to do it again; make it look good. That’s my number for now, though.
Williams is having trouble because senior defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike is wearing the number 91 that Williams wore at Ohio State. It looks like he won’t be wearing it for long, though.
Williams shared on Instagram a text message from someone telling him that his phone number has been changed to 91, which makes it look like Onwuzurike gave up.
The Twitter account @nfl_jersey_num also wrote about this change in jersey number.
It’s not clear what number Onwuzurike is taking right now. Before, he wore number 75 for the Lions, but right now Colby Sorsdal has that number. He wore No. 95 (now owned by Pat O’Connor) and No. 9 (Ennis Rakestraw) in college. With 90 players on the roster, there aren’t many numbers that can be used. However, 79, 77 (don’t do it), and 56 are some choices. Teams can have one set of duplicate numbers during the off-season, so Onwuzurike might still be wearing the 91… for now.
More often than not, when numbers are traded, there is some kind of payment involved. We need to find out what Tyleik Williams could offer Onwuzurike in exchange for his brand-new shirt number.
