John Textor or Mike Ashley would need to dig deep if they want to take control of Sheffield Wednesday and Hillsborough Stadium.
During Dejphon Chansiri’s troubled final months, player wages were delayed in five of the last seven months, prompting key figures like Michael Smith, Josh Windass, and Djeidi Gassama to leave the club. Initial reports suggested Ashley hoped to strike a deal worth around £10 million — but that now appears far below the true asking price.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, the full cost of purchasing Sheffield Wednesday and Hillsborough, once administration fees and debts are included, could reach around £50 million. While this is half the £100 million valuation Chansiri had once placed on the club, it’s still a significant jump from Ashley’s proposed offer.
Chansiri originally bought the Owls for £30 million in 2015, meaning the club could fetch a higher figure despite their ongoing financial struggles and automatic 12-point deduction.
Ashley, the former Newcastle United owner, has been heavily linked with a move, though the price tag may give him pause. By contrast, American investor John Textor — who recently sold his stake in Crystal Palace for £175 million — appears to be in a far stronger position to push through a deal if he decides to proceed.
Despite their off-field turmoil and looming relegation, Sheffield Wednesday’s proud history and loyal fanbase continue to make them an attractive prospect for potential buyers.
