REVEALED: What the video assistant referee (VAR) told the referee concerning Kyogo Furuhashi’s demand for a penalty in Celtic’s match against Kilmarnock

Celtic fans finally know why Kyogo Furuhashi wasn’t given a penalty in the first Scottish Premiership game of the season, which took place at Parkhead against Kilmarnock.

Japan’s scorer was hurt by Kilmarnock’s Ross McCrorie as he tried to get on the end of a free kick flicked by Matt O’Riley, a former Celtic star.

Just as Kyogo was about to touch the ball, McCrorie ran out and knocked out the Celtic scorer for good.

Don Robertson was the whistle-blower and VAR operator for the game, and Greg Aitken was in charge of the technology.

There was a lot of discussion among past referees and commentators about whether or not the decision to not give Celtic the penalty was right or wrong. Now, the SFA has released audio and video of the incident to make it clear how the officials made their choice.

VAR talks about the Celtic penalty decision

REVEALED: What the video assistant referee (VAR) told the referee concerning Kyogo Furuhashi's demand for a penalty in Celtic's match against Kilmarnock

The SFA launched a new monthly podcast last night called The VAR Review. The video shows all the steps and stages of how the officials made their decision, which Celtic fans will find very interesting.

This is how the talk went:

Judge: “No, no.” “Not for me.”

VAR: “Could you show it to me again?” “I believe that is the same as before.”

“When he comes out, it looks like the goalkeeper gets bigger,” the referee said. Something is moving, but I don’t see it, and I’m not looking in the right direction.

VAR: “But I think he might be getting the ball.” But it seems like it would happen, doesn’t it?”

The ref said, “Let the VAR check.” They should check.

VAR: “Don, I’m still looking into the possible penalty.” “May we see the free kick?”

Judge: “I don’t know if he just got big and hasn’t moved or if he took him out afterward.”

VAR: “I think he’s just grown up and not changed.”
