Rob Dorsett outlines why the EFL has imposed an additional six-point deduction on Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have been hit with another points deduction, though it appears this will be the last.

The English Football League (EFL) confirmed that the club will lose six points immediately due to “multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations.”

However, the league stressed it is not planning any further penalties, and discussions are ongoing regarding the fee restriction ban currently affecting the club.

The deduction relates to charges against the club and former owner Dejphon Chansiri dating back to June. Wednesday previously had 12 points docked in October after entering administration, leaving them at -6. They had recently regained two points but now drop another six, leaving them on -10—27 points from safety after just 18 matches.

The EFL statement said:

“Following earlier media reports, the EFL can confirm that Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations, with Mr Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL Club for a period of three years. Separately, the EFL and Sheffield Wednesday remain in discussions regarding its appeal against the fee restriction, which is currently set to run until the end of the winter 2027 transfer window. This is likely to be resolved as part of the Club’s exit from administration. No further comment will be made at this time.”

The league added that while ongoing issues from the 2025/26 season are still being reviewed by the independent Club Financial Reporting Unit, no further points deductions are expected. A full statement will follow once these matters are formally concluded.
