Ruud van Nistelrooy provides an explanation for the double substitution made by Manchester United against Leicester. The double substitution that Ruud van Nistelrooy made early in the second half was “necessary” as Manchester United defeated Leicester City 3-0. Van Nistelrooy elected to substitute Jonny Evans and Alejandro Garnacho in the 50th minute.

The duo replaced Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford seven minutes later.Evans moved to the position of centre back, while Noussair Mazraoui transitioned from left back to right back as Lisandro Martinez moved to left back. Garnacho was a direct replacement for Rashford on the left flank. Dalot has been in the starting lineup for all 18 of United’s matches this season, as specialist left backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have been unable to participate. Rashford has only been starting on the bench twice this season and has failed to score in eight outings.

Garnacho scored his seventh goal of the season and his second during Van Nistelrooy’s four-game interim stint by curling the ball in.

Having started 38 consecutive games last season, the 20-year-old is United’s leading scorer this term and had started their previous seven matches. The scheduling was such that I believed it was imperative to implement those modifications in the current game,” Van Nistelrooy described. “Players who have played an excessive amount of minutes in numerous games due to the limited number of players on the team must also be replaced in order to maintain their health and fitness.

“Additionally, there are additional players in the squad who have returned. Jonny Evans, who is exceptional, arrives and executes the task. Lisandro will proceed to the left and perform their duties.

Before the game, I conversed with Alejandro: “You are playing an excessive amount of minutes and games, and I would like you to make a difference as a substitute.”

“It was the reality we were in, and it was beneficial to have a plethora of players on board, such as Christian Eriksen, who could replace Casemiro, who has also played in nearly every minute over the past period.”
